BC Ferries has shortlisted shipyards in B.C., Poland and Italy for the job of installing a dual fuel system during mid-life upgrades on the two Spirit-class vessels.
Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards is on the list, which was whittled down to three from five yards responding to a request for proposals.
Also in the running is Remontowa Shipbuilding SA of Gdansk, Poland. This is the same yard that is building three intermediate-sized B.C. Ferries.
Dual fuel systems allow ships to run on liquefied natural gas, a greener and less costly fuel, as well as on marine low-sulphur diesel.
The third yard is Fincantieri of Italy.
