June is officially recognized as Italian Heritage Month by the Government of Canada, the Province of British Columbia, and the City of Vancouver. To commemorate this prestigious designation, the Italian Cultural Centre (ICC) invites all communities to attend our planned events in June that celebrate Italian food, music, literature and film.
ICC President Michael Cuccione notes “We work throughout the year to promote and share our treasured Italian culture, and we are especially proud to offer numerous events during Italian Heritage Month, many of which are free and family friendly. Everyone is invited to celebrate with us this June.”
The ICC is a proud supporter of the Italian Day in “Little Italy” and the Italian Contemporary Film Festival, and in collaboration with the Italian Consulate in Vancouver, will host the Festa Della Repubblica celebration of Italy’s National Day. The ICC will also host many additional Italian-themed events and food workshops throughout the month of June, including a special outdoor Italian market on June 14th.
In addition to the festivities, Italian Heritage Month is also a time of reflection on the hardships faced by Italian citizens throughout Canada in the World War II period. As such, the ICC will host a special museum exhibit on the Internment of Italian Canadians in the 1940s, which will show in tandem with our other museum exhibits, Tuesdays through Saturdays in June. Admission to our museum is always free.
Despite the hardships, Italian-Canadians persevered and have continued to be significant contributors to Canadian society. “I’m humbled to follow in the footsteps of all those who came before me to preserve and promote the Italian culture in Vancouver,” says Joan D’Angola Kluge, ICC Executive Director.
