As we wind down the summer and prepare for children starting school, the weather’s inevitable change we were very fortunate to experience the final summer long table series, La Cena in Rosso, Dinner in Red in the open Piazza at Il Centro, Italian Cultural Centre. Catering director, Fabio Rasotto and his team, including Chef Jackson prepared a delicious meal inspired by the colour red. The first introduction to the event was the rose petals on the ground directing you to the beautiful table settings adorned with more rose pedals. The crowd adorned in various hues of red created a special ambiance for the event. President Michael Cuccione welcomed the guests of the Cena in Rosso and was a gracious host ensuring that everyone was enjoying themselves. Also present was Domenic Cuccione who along with wife, Gloria and Michael Cuccione prepare for the Michael Cuccione Foundation Gala to be held at Il Centro on September 21st. Also supporting the event were Il Centro Board Members, Joe and Carla Finamore, Randy Rinaldo, Carmelina Cupo and Mario Miceli. We were also honoured to have Councillor Melissa De Genova and Councillor Lisa Dominato in attendance, to support our event and to honour their Italian heritage. They are a testament to the ongoing accomplishments and contribution of our Italian community to the landscape of our cities, provinces and country. The significance of their involvement is the recent motion presented by Councillor De Genova that was passed by city council to consider more piazza spaces in Vancouver. The opportunity to sit in an open piazza setting while enjoying a beautiful meal, a glass of wine, wonderful company and conversation is the atmosphere we to create in Vancouver and this province. That defines our culture! It is centered around food while bringing people together, around a table, eating great food and enjoying life. I remember as a child, guests coming to our house sitting at the kitchen table and wondered why they never went into the living room or the den, like those non-Italian families on TV.
In the summer those visits occurred sitting at the table outside on the deck. Last night’s dinner had a diversity that reflected Vancouver and it is evident that you don’t have to be of Italian heritage to enjoy the culture of a beautiful dinner in an outdoor setting with great friends, new and old. Last night’s dinner was a sell out and we look forward to planning similar events for the coming year. Another great dinner with tremendous friends sharing an entertaining evening.
