On Sunday, September 15th Burnaby will host the 39th Annual Terry Fox Run at Swangard Stadium, Central Park. Why is this run important? This event has raised over $750 million that has been invested in Cancer research. This funded research has saved and extended lives since 1980. Unfortunately, every family, including our own, has been affected by this horrible disease and that’s why I decided to get involved to support this cause. I am hoping that the Italian community will be one of the many multicultural communities who will proudly support this run. We are looking to raise $50,000 and have 500 participants join us for a 2km, 5km or 10km walk/run through Burnaby’s Central Park. We need the help of our Italian community. We would like to see a strong showing of participants from our community. Get a friend and come for a walk to support this fantastic cause. If you have a business and would like to donate food or refreshments or a prize item for our silent auction or simply make a financial contribution.

This is a family-oriented event which focuses on inclusion. There is no charge or minimum donation to participate in this event, we encourage you to give what you can. You can also have your run sponsored by friends and family members. Or create a team of runners, it’s all possible for the Terry Fox Run. We will have live entertainment, a children’s section and of course, refreshments for volunteers, runners and walkers. This atmosphere brings our community together to raise funds for cancer research and to recognize a Canadian hero and icon that has influenced the world. We encourage participants to run for someone that has lost their battle with cancer or who may be currently undergoing treatment for cancer or someone who has survived cancer. It is a fantastic way to honour their courage. The same courage that Terry Fox exemplified as he ran a marathon a day to run across Canada. This event celebrates the advances in cancer research, the same research that would have kept Terry alive today. There is another fundraiser that will be taking place the night before, Saturday September 14th, the Comedy for a Cure show at the Firefighters Public House. This show features top lower mainland comics who are donating their time to support this cause. The show will be free but, only to those who bring their cheque book and cash to contribute towards this cause. This show is not to be missed; you will never see this comedic talent all together performing at one location on one night. I reach out to the generosity of the Italian Community to show our continued contribution and building of community that we have been famous for since the early 1900s.
