“For the nearly forty percent of the Canadian population that his mother tongue is neither English or French, the Ethnic Press and Media of the country performs a unique function within the boundaries of the Canadian mass media. Generally its purpose is to inform its readers in a language more readily understood than the official languages of Canada.
History is telling us, that ethnic media have been part of our media landscape for more than a century. By Ethnic Media we define broadly to include media for immigrants, ethnic, racial and linguistic minorities.
There are six hundred and fifty newspapers and magazine today publisher all over Canada, serving more than twelve million Canadians from all over the world, which made Canada their home.
Today, the ethnic media have become an enduring feature of everyday Canadian life. The numbers suggest a great proliferation of the ethnic media particularly over the past three decades; proliferation in terms of numbers of publications and broadcast and a variety of media forms”, declared in his speech Thomas S. Saras President of the National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada.
For the recognition of the contributions made by publications and individuals of the multicultural communities to their own community and to Canadian society in general Thomas Saras award a plaque to Maura De Freitas, Editor of Canadian Celtic Connections and Vinnie Combow, General Manager of the Voice Group of Publications.
