Recognizing Italian Heritage Month and Italian Day on the Drive

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERADear Giorgio Moretti,
I wanted to bring this initiative on to your attention. I am working with Vancouver City Councillor Melissa De Genova to get Italian Day officially recognized as a civic event at the City of Vancouver.
Little Italy – Vancouver and Italian Day on The Drive need your support.
Please write a letter in support of this motion to Mayor and Council and/or sign up to speak on May 2nd at Vancouver City Hall Advocates of Vancouver’s Little Italy and Italian Day on The Drive are thrilled to see Vancouver City Councillor Melissa De Genova’s motion, calling on City Council to formally recognize Italian Heritage Month and Italian Day on the Drive as an official celebration and event. The entire motion is included below.
The City of Vancouver recognizes many other cultural celebrations and events and it is time to add the month of June; recognized federally as Italian Heritage Month, to that list! Italian Day on The Drive takes place annually in Little Italy and is by far the largest celebration during Italian Heritage month. In 2017, Italian Day on the Drive tied one other event, for the second largest event in the City of Vancouver, with over 200,000 people in attendance.
The second part of Councillor De Genova’s motion, asking City of Vancouver staff to consider increased funding and grants for Italian Day on the Drive. While the City of Vancouver has committed more than $100,000 to single events that do not have civic celebration status, Italian Day has only received $4,000 annually for the past two years. This free, family-friendly event, comes with great costs and the requirements of the City of Vancouver, increase these costs every year. Although the Italian Day on The Drive Committee, private sponsors and the Commercial Drive The Drive BIA members contribute to the costs and have managed to barely cover their budget to date, it becomes more difficult each year to hold this event because of higher costs and stricter permit requirements imposed on the event by the City of Vancouver.
Randy Rinaldo, Little Italy Advocate, Italian Day on The Drive committee member and Vice-President of Il Centro Italian Cultural Centre, supports the motion along with Brunella Gaudio Executive Director of the Italian Day Festival Society and has signed up to speak and urge Vancouver City Council to support this motion. The motion is on the Council meeting agenda for Tuesday, May 1st, but speakers to the motion may be heard on Wednesday, May 2nd.
Join Randy and Brunella and sign up to speak at the committee meeting here.
