Canucks Season Opener as Poolies Get Together for Their Annual Draft

Bo Horvat scored twice, Jacob Markstrom settled down to make 33 saves after allowing a goal on the game’s first shot, Bo Horvat scored twice and the Vancouver Canucks beat the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 on Saturday night. Brandon Sutter also scored for the Canucks, the last team in the NHL to start their season. Kris Russell had a goal and an assist, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had the other goal for the Oilers, who opened their schedule with a 3-0 home victory Wednesday over the Calgary Flames behind Connor McDavid’s hat trick. Sutter played a key role in shutting down McDavid, who was held off the scoresheet for the first time in 16 games dating back to last season. Travis Green made his debut as an NHL head coach behind the Canucks’ bench as Vancouver picked up its first regulation win over Edmonton since Nov. 19, 2014.
It’s been 35 plus years and running as this group of pooleis continue to get together and have their annual hockey draft. The draft took place at the 8 Rinks Sports Complex on Saturday evening with close to 30 teams attending. Each team was entered into the draw with the draft order drawn out of a hat with even rounds in a snake order 1-30 and then back to 1. Each team selected 12 players including 2 defensemen and 1 rookie. Four prizes are awarded to the top finisher with the first prize of $3,000. It makes it for an exciting season if you enjoy following hockey and most important it`s a great way to poke fun at your friends throughout the season especially if you are ahead in the pool! The pool was started back in 1980 with a group of coworkers from Shoppers Drug Mart and the tradition has continued thanks to now some of the sons and daughters along with their friends. I recall when some would come to the draft and tell me that there are all Franks and Tony’s so they named their team “Not A Frank”. This team from North Vancouver also happened to win last year’s first prize.
Good luck to everyone and Go Canucks Go!
